The total production for 2012-13 crop was a record 8.88 million tonnes. With Chana or Bengal gram is grown in India only during the rabi or winter season and the area sown till January 3 was 500,000 hectares more than the corresponding date last year. Yet, there is considerable domestic demand and with the MSP set seven per cent higher than last year, prices are expected to find a floor. For consumers, the retail price has hovered around ~50 a kg over the past couple of months, showing the soft demand pressures that continue to exist.

Due to differences in methodology, the actual levels of the IPM differ from the corresponding Wholesale Price Index (WPI). However, broad trends are in sync.
