Odisha’s rural expenditure, especially on packaged consumer goods, has risen in the nine years to 2013. Offsetting the theme of prosperity through consumption is a mixed set of social development indicators.

Three-fourths of households in the state have no access to toilets, but Odisha’s literacy rate has improved by 10 percentage points during the period.
